Why is the Steigerwald called Steigerwald? The Steigerwald, stretching between Würzburg, Schweinfurt, Bamberg, and Nuremberg, gets its name from the “Steigen,” steep, west-facing slopes carved by ancient rivers. These slopes, once part of a drainage system flowing towards the Danube, were dramatically altered by the Rhine’s erosion. This geological shift left behind the prominent escarpments that give the Steigerwald its unique character. The name first appeared in 1151, in a document from King Konrad III. It referred to a forest bordering the Ebrach Monastery, highlighting the region’s long-standing connection with its natural surroundings. The Steigerwald’s history intertwines with the growth of Franconian settlements. While early settlements sprang up along rivers like the Main and Regnitz, the Steigerwald itself remained largely untouched until the High Middle Ages. The Zisterzienserkloster Ebrach played a crucial role in the area’s development, shaping its cultural and economic landscape. Later, the region became divided between the bishoprics of Bamberg and Würzburg in the north and the margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth in the south. This division is still reflected in the castles, ruins, and other historical landmarks scattered throughout the Steigerwald. Today, the Steigerwald is known for its rich biodiversity. The northern Steigerwald is a haven for over 108 bird species. This includes the middle spotted woodpecker, whose population thrives in the area. Rare bats, amphibians, and insects also call this region home. The wildcat, reintroduced in the 1980s, roams the forests. Numerous protected areas, like the Naturwald Knetzberg-Böhgrund, preserve this ecological treasure. The Steigerwald is more than just forests. It is a place where nature and culture intertwine. The region boasts a thriving beer culture. Numerous small breweries continue a long tradition of brewing. The Steigerwald is also part of the Franconian wine region. Its vineyards, some reaching almost 400 meters above sea level, produce renowned wines like Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau. The Bocksbeutelstraße, a scenic route named after the distinctive Bocksbeutel wine bottle, winds through the vineyards, offering a taste of Franconian wine culture. Visitors can explore the Steigerwald-Zentrum to learn about sustainable forestry. Or, they can climb the Baumwipfelpfad, a treetop path offering panoramic views of the forest. From its unique geology to its vibrant cultural traditions, the Steigerwald offers a captivating glimpse into the heart of Franconia.
