A chilling tale unfolds here at the Steigerkreuz. This isn’t just any stone cross. This is the Steigerkreuz also known as the Monk’s Cross. It stands as a silent witness to a brutal act. A testament to a life cut short.

The Steigerkreuz is a 270-centimeter-tall Greek cross. It’s crafted from sandstone a sturdy material mirroring the gravity of its story. The inscription etched into its surface tells a tale of murder. It reads “hIC EST OCCISUS MA/GISTER hENRICUS/DE SYBELEIBEN/SACERDOS”. Translated it says “Here died Magister Heinrich priest of Siebleben”.

This Magister Heinrich was a canon at St Severi. He was murdered on December 10 1323. The culprit Count Heinrich von Schwarzburg. The cross’s erection was a form of atonement a way to appease the spirits. Or perhaps the law. The exact circumstances remain shrouded in the mists of time.

The Steigerkreuz wasn’t always here. Road construction in 1968 forced its relocation. It was moved westward. The move unfortunately caused damage to its shaft. Yet it stands tall a reminder of the past. It survived the centuries. The inscription remains remarkably intact. The kneeling priest relief a poignant detail.

Some whisper of a different story. One about a monk punished for causing a devastating fire in Erfurt in 1472. But the documented death of Magister Heinrich in 1323 stands as the more reliable account. Both stories are tragic. Both speak of loss. Both underscore the significance of this place. This remarkable cross.

The Steigerkreuz’s scale is noteworthy. Its size reflects the high social standing of the victim. A prominent figure in Erfurt’s religious community. His murder was a significant event. The cross serves as a tangible representation of medieval justice. Or perhaps a lack thereof.

Look closely at the details. The inscription’s careful lettering. The worn surface. The small relief of the kneeling priest. Each element whispers a fragment of history. They remind us of the Steigerkreuz’s importance. This place speaks volumes about life death and the passage of time. The Steigerkreuz stands as a poignant memorial. A solemn marker on the edge of the Steigerwald forest.
