High above the valley stands the majestic Statut du Christ. Its imposing presence dominates the landscape. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a symbol of peace a testament to faith. Erected in 1934 it was inaugurated on August 19th under the watchful eye of Abbot Claude-Marie Delassiat.
The Statut du Christ is more than just a monument. It’s a story etched in stone. A story of devotion. Abbot Delassiat dreamed of this statue. He wanted to honor Pope Pius XI. The Pope was a devout man. He was also a passionate mountaineer. Abbot Delassiat’s fundraising efforts brought this dream to life. The massive statue was built from reinforced concrete. It weighs 500 metric tons. It stands 25 meters tall.
The interior of the Statut du Christ though sadly closed to the public houses a chapel. This chapel is a hidden gem. It is largely decorated in the Art Deco style. Inside you’ll find an altar. Three bas-reliefs depict angels and Christ the King. Four statues stand guard. The Virgin of Peace. The Virgin Mary. A bust of Pius XI. A bust of St Joseph sculpted by Georges Serras. Serras was a master sculptor specializing in monumental religious art. He was crucial in the statue’s creation. He worked alongside architect Féveille.
Imagine climbing the narrow wooden staircase. The view from the platform at the top is breathtaking. You can see the entire valley spread out below. The scale of the Statut du Christ is truly awe-inspiring from this vantage point. The enormity of the statue is emphasized by its 200-meter height above the valley.
The Statut du Christ isn’t just a tribute to faith and peace. It’s a time capsule. It reflects the hopes and dreams of a generation. After the Second World War a two-tonne bell was added to the nearby steeple. Its resonant sound echoes through the valley a reminder of the enduring spirit of peace. The Dans L’Temps association organizes guided tours of the chapel. These tours offer a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of the Statut du Christ.
