“To the people of Lille soldiers and civilians” The inscription on the Statut commémorative 1914-1918 War memorial speaks volumes. It stands as a testament to the suffering endured during the Great War. We stand before this poignant monument in Place Rihour. This memorial is more than just stone and bronze. It’s a living tribute to the citizens of Lille. Both soldiers and civilians sacrificed during the First World War. The memorial commemorates their heroism and suffering. Their ultimate sacrifice was made for peace.
The Statut commémorative 1914-1918 War memorial wasn’t erected overnight. It was the result of a competition in 1924. The city of Lille wanted to honor all those who suffered. This included those in the Armed Forces and civilians. The winning design Melencolia was created by architect Jacques Alleman and sculptor Edgar-Henri Boutry.
Originally Melencolia was to feature many bas-reliefs. These would depict dramatic events of the war in Lille. The city later decided to commemorate some events with separate memorials. These would include memorials for Louise de Bettignies a nurse who died in a German prison. There would be another for civilians executed as spies. A memorial for young Leon Trulin a Belgian executed as a spy was also planned.
The final design of the Statut commémorative 1914-1918 War memorial features three bas-reliefs. These depict Peace Relief and The Prisoners. The central bas-relief shows British soldiers. They represent Lille’s liberation in 1918. This is unusual for a French war memorial. It highlights the crucial role of Allied forces in the city’s liberation.
The Golden Book within the memorial contains the names of Lillois who died in the war. Additions have been made since its unveiling on May 22 1927. These additions reflect France’s involvement in later conflicts. Engraved paving stones in front of the memorial remember various groups. These include trade unions and the 83000 Polish troops who fell liberating France.
Every year on November 11 and May 8 citizens of Lille gather here. They remember the sacrifices made during both World Wars. They lay floral tributes at the foot of this imposing structure. The Statut commémorative 1914-1918 War memorial stands as a solemn reminder. It’s a reminder of the devastating impact of war. It’s also a beacon of remembrance and a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Lille. The memorial’s message of peace and remembrance continues to resonate. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving peace and never forgetting the sacrifices made to achieve it.
