Founded in 1859 the Romanian Land Forces have a rich history. They are the main component of Romania’s Armed Forces. Alexandru Ioan Cuza commanded them initially. He was Domnitor of Romania until 1866.
The Romanian Land Forces played vital roles in many conflicts. They fought in the Romanian War of Independence. They were present in the Second Balkan War. They participated in World War I against the Central Powers. They secured key victories at Mărăști and Mărășești.
World War II saw them initially supporting the Axis powers. They fought against the Soviet Union. However, in August 1944 Romania switched sides. It fought against Germany under Soviet control.
After the war the army underwent Sovietization. The communists seized power. The army was reorganized.
The Romanian Revolution of 1989 brought changes. Shortage of funds led to units disbanding. Much equipment was phased out. Military capability declined. This was due to lack of fuel and training.
Since the late 1990s positive changes occurred. Combat readiness has grown steadily. The military budget increased significantly. It rose from 636 million dollars to 2.8 billion dollars in 2007. Conscription was abolished. Professionalization was completed.
The first attempt to create an independent Romanian army was in 1848. Gheorghe Magheru led this at Râureni. Ottoman forces stopped the revolution. Magheru ordered his troops to disband.
Today the Statul Major al Forțelor Terestre is a modern military organization. Full professionalization and equipment overhaul have transformed the Land Forces since 2007.
The Land Forces motto reflects its commitment. Major General Ciprian Marin currently leads the Land Forces Staff.
