Behold the Statuia doctorului Constantin I Istrati. This bronze statue stands proudly in Bucharest’s Carol I Park. It’s a tribute to a remarkable man. A man whose life spanned medicine politics and national service.

The statue itself is a testament to dedication. Sculpted by Oscar Spathe it was unveiled on November 4 1928. It depicts Dr Istrati in his role as a professor. He seems lost in thought lecturing perhaps.

But Dr Istrati’s story goes far beyond this pose. He was a prominent figure. He served as a university professor. He was a member of the Romanian Academy. He even held ministerial posts in several governments.

More impressively he served as Bucharest’s mayor from October 1912 to March 1913. This wasn’t a coincidence. Dr Istrati was instrumental in the creation of Carol I Park. He oversaw its development as the park’s commissioner general. The statue’s placement here is a fitting acknowledgment of his contribution.

Fundraising for the statue involved a remarkable effort. A committee of leading figures in Romanian culture and science spearheaded this. They rallied support and raised over a million lei. This demonstrates the high esteem in which Dr Istrati was held.

Interestingly the statue has had a journey. It was originally located in front of the Pavilion of Industry. This pavilion however was demolished. The statue was moved near the Roman Arenas. It wasn’t until 2009 that it received a new pedestal. A replica of the original. It now stands in a position of honor near the main entrance.

The bronze bas-relief on the front of the pedestal is also of note. It portrays Dr Istrati in his laboratory. This shows another facet of his diverse career.

Dr Istrati’s life was marked by both achievement and tragedy. He was decorated by both King Carol I of Romania and the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. His humanitarian work caring for soldiers and prisoners was recognized. Yet he died in Paris in 1918. Away from his homeland amid the turmoil following the forced armistice.

This statue the Statuia doctorului Constantin I Istrati is more than just a bronze figure. It embodies the life and legacy of a prominent Romanian. His contributions spanned many fields leaving an enduring impact on Bucharest and Romania itself. Let us pause to reflect on the significance of this powerful symbol.
