Gaze upon this majestic statue. This is the Statue of King Ananda Mahidol. It stands tall a tribute to a beloved king. King Ananda Mahidol was the eighth king of the Chakri dynasty. He was also the elder brother of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This statue wasn’t always here.
The statue’s unveiling was a significant event. It took place on June 9 2012. King Bhumibol Adulyadej himself presided over the ceremony. Queen Sirikit and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn were also present. This day is now celebrated as Ananda Mahidol Day. The statue is three times larger than King Ananda Mahidol in real life.
The statue is situated near the Rama VIII Bridge. It’s in the Bang Phlat district of Bangkok. The bridge itself was constructed to ease traffic congestion. It connects inner Bangkok to the Thon Buri side. A multi-purpose building stands nearby. It offers visitors a chance to learn more about important historical places. These include Phra Sumen Fort and Bang Khun Phrom Palace.
The creation of the statue was a meticulous process. Sculptors had to carefully triple the size of an existing metal statue. This involved creating molds plaster casts and then meticulously sculpting a larger clay figure. Finally the pieces were cast in alloy and assembled. The project cost approximately 10 million baht.
This imposing figure looks serenely across the Chao Phraya River. It overlooks Suan Luang Phra Ram 8 Park. The park serves as a recreational and cultural area.
