Is that a king on horseback? Right before you stands the equestrian Statue of Constantine I. It is a tribute to a man who reigned over Greece during a turbulent period. Let’s delve into the story of Constantine I, a king who left an indelible mark on Greek history.

Constantine I ruled as the King of Greece during two distinct periods. First, from 1913 to 1917. Then, again from 1920 to 1922. Born on August 2, 1868, he ascended to the throne following his father’s assassination on March 18, 1913.

Before becoming king, Constantine I had a distinguished military career. He was the commander-in-chief of the Hellenic Army. He led Greek forces during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913. Greece expanded to include Thessaloniki under his command. The country doubled in both area and population.

His reign was not without controversy. Constantine I clashed with Eleftherios Venizelos. Their disagreement centered on Greece’s role in World War I. Constantine I wanted Greece to remain neutral, but Venizelos favored joining the Entente powers. This disagreement led to the National Schism, a deep division within Greek society.

Constantine I forced Venizelos to resign twice due to their conflicting views. However, in 1917, under pressure from the Entente forces, he was forced to leave Greece. They threatened to bombard Athens. His second son, Alexander, then became king.

After Alexander’s death and Venizelos’ defeat in the 1920 legislative elections, a plebiscite favored Constantine’s return. He was reinstated as king. However, his second reign was short-lived.

The Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 ended in disaster for Greece. Constantine I abdicated the throne for the second and final time in 1922. His eldest son, George II, succeeded him. Constantine I went into exile and died just four months later in Sicily.

The Statue of Constantine I before you serves as a reminder of his complex legacy. It is located on Leoforos Alexandras Avenue. The statue captures the king on horseback. It reflects his military background and leadership.

Another statue of Constantine XI Palaiologos stands in Metropolis Square. Constantine XI Palaiologos was the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire. He is remembered for his bravery during the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The statue depicts him in full armor, holding a cross and a sword. This symbolizes his role as a defender of faith and a military leader.

Whether it’s Constantine I or Constantine XI Palaiologos, these statues remind us of Greece’s long and storied past. They stand as testaments to leadership, bravery, and the enduring spirit of the Greek people. Take a moment to reflect on the weight of history that surrounds you. Consider the lives and legacies of those who shaped this nation.
