“Let men be free.” These powerful words etched into the bronze of the Statue of Abraham Lincoln greet you. This isn’t just any statue. This Abraham Lincoln stands proudly in Detroit a testament to freedom and perseverance.

Originally a gift to Henry M Leland founder of the Lincoln Motor Company the statue is one of seven castings. Designed by Alfonso Pelzer it was initially on the company’s lawn. The inscription a simple yet profound statement reflects Lincoln’s legacy.

In 1958 the statue moved to its current location the Skillman Branch of the Detroit Public Library. This wasn’t just a relocation. It marked a shift from corporate grounds to a space for public appreciation. The library itself perhaps fittingly houses extensive archives on the auto industry.

Sadly the statue suffered vandalism in 1969. A restoration followed in 1986 but more damage occurred in the 1990s. The statue’s resilience mirrors Lincoln’s own strength and determination. A testament to the dedication of those who believe in its importance another restoration followed. This time thanks to generous funding by the Oliver Dewey Marcks Foundation.

Today the Statue of Abraham Lincoln stands as a symbol of hope and freedom in Detroit. A lasting tribute to a man who changed the course of history. A reminder that even amidst adversity the pursuit of liberty prevails. The statue a powerful reminder of Lincoln’s pivotal role in ending slavery continues to inspire and stand as a proud Detroit landmark.
