Beneath our feet lie echoes of Nice’s spirited past. We stand before the Statue de Masséna. This monument honors André Masséna. He was a native son and a celebrated Marshal of France.

Masséna served Napoleon Bonaparte with distinction. His story is etched in bronze and stone. The Statue de Masséna isn’t just a static figure. It is a tableau of Nice’s connection to France and its imperial history.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse sculpted this impressive monument. Inaugurated on August 15, 1869, it marked Saint Napoleon Day. This day was a national holiday during the Second Empire. It also commemorated the centenary of Napoleon I’s birth.

Look closely at Masséna. He stands tall in his Marshal’s uniform. His head is bare. His right foot rests firmly on a discarded cannon. This represents his triumph in battle. His right hand gestures commandingly. His left hand grips his sword. This portrays his strength and resolve.

The Statue de Masséna vividly captures a moment during the Battle of Essling. This battle occurred on the Danube. It immortalizes Masséna’s courage under fire.

Observe the base of the Statue de Masséna. It has detailed bronze sculptures. A young woman embodies Victory or History. She holds a saber. She inscribes Masséna’s name on a medallion.

To the left, a bas-relief shows Masséna on horseback. This shows the Battle of Zurich. To the right, another depicts him during the siege of Genoa. These scenes are frozen in time.

Originally, there was debate about the Statue de Masséna’s location. Planners considered placing it on Place Masséna. Ultimately, they chose this location. It ensured Masséna wouldn’t turn his back to the old city.

The square upon which the Statue de Masséna stands has historical significance. It was built on the covered Paillon torrent. The Paillon’s covering was Nice’s early urban development.

André Reille, François Malausséna, and Victor Masséna spoke at the inauguration. Each had familial ties to Masséna. Their presence underscored the monument’s importance.

Interestingly, the project faced funding challenges. Public donations were insufficient. Masséna’s family stepped in. They provided the remaining funds. This ensured the statue’s completion.

In 2009, the Statue de Masséna was listed as a historical monument. This officially recognized its cultural value. The statue continues to draw visitors. People come from around the world. They admire its artistry and honor Marshal Masséna’s legacy.

The inscription “NICE A MASSENA 1809-1909” is seen on the statue. It marks the centenary. The inscription “Carrier-Belleuse 1867” credits the sculptor. The word “ESSLING” refers to the celebrated battle.

Take a moment to appreciate the Statue de Masséna. It represents Nice’s rich past. It links local history to the grand narratives of France. It invites us to reflect on legacy and remembrance.
