Fancy spending a night in a prison cell? Statsfængslet ‘Ballonen’ offers you just that. This former state prison on Christiansø is now a unique youth hostel.
Statsfængslet ‘Ballonen’ is more than just accommodation. It’s a journey into the past. Political prisoners were banished here. The most famous prisoner was Dr. Dampe. He was imprisoned here from 1826 to 1841.
Today, Statsfængslet ‘Ballonen’ has five cells. These can be rented for overnight stays throughout the year. Each cell is furnished. It includes a sofa bed for two people. You will also find mattress pads, duvets and pillows. A table, chair, and cupboard are also provided. Remember to bring your own bed linen and towels.
One cell in Statsfængslet ‘Ballonen’ has been converted. It now serves as communal toilet and shower facilities. Each cell gets a locker. Another cell is a communal kitchen. It has a stove and a refrigerator/freezer. A dishwasher, coffee maker, and electric kettle are available. You will also find pots, pans, and basic kitchen utensils. Plates, cups, glasses, and cutlery are provided too.
Only one cell in Statsfængslet ‘Ballonen’ still has bars on the window. This is on the first floor. This was Dr. Dampe’s cell. He was a dissident. He was imprisoned here for 15 years.

Before you leave Statsfængslet ‘Ballonen’, remember to clean your cell. You must leave by 10 am on your departure date. Smoking is not allowed inside the prison. This includes the cells and communal areas.
