This plaque, a testament to courage and innovation, stands as a reminder of a time when American volunteers crossed the Atlantic to aid their Allies. It marks the spot where over 1,000 Texans, mostly aircraft specialists, volunteered to be part of Station X, a top-secret repair and supply depot in Burtonwood, England during World War II. Station X was a crucial component in keeping Allied aircraft flying during a critical time in the war. These brave men and women were sent across the Atlantic to keep the Allied planes flying, ensuring that the British Royal Air Force had the support they needed to fight back against the Germans. They had no idea where they were going, that is why Station X became its secret name. Arriving at their mysterious destination, they were immediately thrust into intense work, fixing aircraft around the clock, even during air raids. These Texan volunteers were instrumental in modifying and overhauling thousands of aircraft, including B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, P-47 Thunderbolt fighters, and P-38 Lightning fighters. Their work allowed the Allies to keep the skies free, and ultimately helped to secure victory over Nazi Germany. Today, this marker serves as a tribute to those unsung heroes, forever etched in the annals of history as the Texans who kept ’em flying.
