Tucked away on Todt Hill Road, the Staten Island Academy whispers stories of ambition and growth. Have you ever considered the journey of a school, its evolution through time? Staten Island Academy’s story begins in 1884, a seed planted by Anton Methfessel and other prominent educators. It’s the oldest independent school on Staten Island, a unique institution in this borough. The academy was formed by merging the Methfessel Institute with the Staten Island Academy and Latin School. The “Latin School” portion of the name was quickly dropped as the newly formed academy grew. Originally, the Academy held classes at a grand building in St. George, at the corner of Wall Street and Academy Place. The academy’s influence expanded rapidly. It adopted a progressive curriculum that included Latin, German, French, English, geography, and a plethora of other subjects. Imagine young minds immersed in such a diverse range of studies back in 1885! The school boasted connections to notable figures. Actor Sidney Wollett, Admiral Perry, Booker T. Washington, the Vanderbilts, and social reformer Jacob Riis were all associated with Staten Island Academy. George William Curtis, a member of the academy’s Board of Trustees, even had Curtis High School named after him. In 1964, Staten Island Academy embarked on a new chapter, consolidating its presence at the Todt Hill Road campus. This marked a significant transition, bringing all students under one roof. The academy continued to evolve. Renovations breathed new life into the library and dining hall in the early 2000s. Athletic fields were upgraded, and a fitness center was added. Even a tragedy, the loss of alumnus Alex Steinman in the 9/11 attacks, spurred positive change. The Alexander Robbins Steinman Foundation contributed to the field upgrades in his memory. Staten Island Academy today stands as a testament to its enduring mission: to cultivate well-rounded individuals ready to shape the future. The school is composed of three divisions: Lower School (Pre-K to Grade 4), Middle School (Grades 5-8), and Upper School (Grades 9-12). From its humble beginnings, the Staten Island Academy has flourished, nurturing generations of students within its halls. Its story continues to unfold, written by each new class that passes through its doors.
