Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church

In 1873, a small group of believers ignited a spark of faith that would illuminate Houston for generations. This spark became the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Fourteen souls, led by Rev. B. F. Hemphill, formed the church’s foundation. These charter members included Rev. Frank Brown, Berry Potts, Henry King, Sandy Shepherd, George Mills, John Sanders, Shep Roberts, Louis Kilgore, Mary Brockman, and the wives of Mr. King, Mr. Potts, Mr. Shepherd, and Rev. Brown. Their first home was a humble space on Ninth Avenue near Justice Street. The Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church congregation moved to Grove Street in the summer of 1887. A new church building rose on the Grove Street site in 1916 under the leadership of Rev. J. W. Beatty. The congregation continued to grow. Under Rev. J. W. Wilburn, the church recognized a need to move closer to where its members lived. In 1947, the Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church purchased the land where it stands today. The final payments for this land were made during the tenure of Rev. W. J. Gray. Rev. G. E. Weaver arrived at Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in December 1950. His leadership ushered in an era of significant growth. Groundbreaking for a new building took place on June 30, 1951. The first service within the new walls of Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church was held on May 25, 1952, with Rev. Weaver officiating. The official dedication followed a month later, on June 25, 1952. Remarkably, the church paid off its mortgage just five years later, on September 29, 1957. The church parsonage was completed in December 1955. Its mortgage was burned on August 17, 1964. This rapid progress has been attributed to a combination of divine favor and the dedicated work of the congregation. One former minister simply stated, “God approved the plan and the people had a mind to work.” A church member reflected, “We like to think it was a dream the people had for a long time. Through many trials and difficulties they had hope. They worked and sacrificed and prayed for what has now become a reality.” The Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to their enduring faith and perseverance.
