Stanley Medical College’s story began long before its official establishment in 1938. The seeds were sown in 1740. The East India Company created a medical department. This marked the humble beginning of what would become a renowned institution. The Stanley Hospital now occupies the site of the Monegar Choultry. It was established in 1782. The Madras Native Infirmary was established in 1799. It provided medical services alongside the Monegar Choultry and leper asylum.

In 1830, Raja Sir Ramasamy Mudaliar gifted a hospital and dispensary to the Native Infirmary. Madras University introduced medical courses in 1836. In 1903, a hospital assistant course was introduced. The first Licensed Medical Practitioner diplomas were awarded in 1911.

A significant milestone was reached in 1933. A five-year Diploma in Medicine & Surgery course was inaugurated. Lt. Colonel Sir George Fredrick Stanley, a British parliamentarian, was key. The school was named after him on July 2, 1938. In 1941, three medical and surgical units were established. This expanded to seven units in 1964. The student body grew significantly. In 1938, 72 students were enrolled. By 1963, the number of admissions increased to 150 per year.

Stanley Medical College is associated with the Government Stanley Hospital. The hospital has 1580 beds. It serves a large patient population. Around 5000 patients visit the out-patient facility daily. The hospital has an 8-storey surgical complex. It is equipped for 40 simultaneous surgeries. A separate pediatrics block provides comprehensive care for children.

Admissions to Stanley Medical College are highly competitive. They are based on entrance examinations. These include the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. The college offers Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees. It also offers postgraduate degrees. A sports festival called STANLEA is organized by Stanley Medical College since 1992.

Stanley Medical College has produced many notable people. These include Vilayanur S. Ramachandran a Neurologist and Cognitive Science researcher and Govindappa Venkataswamy, founder of Aravind Eye Hospitals.

Stanley Medical College has a cadaver maintenance unit. It is the first in the country. The anatomy department receives corpses from the Monegar Choultry. This is for scientific study. The college and hospital include a Centre of Excellence for Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery.
