Curiosity tugged at Mrs. Higgins’ bonnet strings as she peered at the row of shops along Clarkston Road. “Is this it then, Stamperland?” she asked, adjusting her spectacles. Stamperland. A name whispered on the wind, carried from the bustling heart of Glasgow to this quiet haven nestled along the White Cart Water. Once farmland, the fields of Stamperland, Slamanshill, and Overlee surrendered to the relentless march of progress in the 1920s and early 1930s. Red sandstone terraces sprung up where cows once grazed, a testament to Glasgow’s burgeoning population. Stamperland became a sought-after suburb, offering respite from the city’s smoky embrace. The heart of Stamperland beats at the junction of Clarkston Road, Stamperland Crescent, and Stamperland Gardens. Here, amongst the local shops, a concrete bell tower reaches for the sky, a silent sentinel marking the former Stamperland Parish Church. Built in stages, with parts completed in 1941, the church served the community for decades. The final service echoed through its modern sanctuary in 2022, before merging with Netherlee Parish Church. Now, a new chapter unfolds. Overlee Park, sprawling across Stamperland’s southeastern edge, offers a different kind of history. Imagine children’s laughter filling the air as they explore the playground. Picture football matches unfolding on the park’s four pitches, their cheers blending with the rustle of leaves in the trees. But beneath the surface, whispers of an ancient past linger. Lost to time, a 2000-year-old village of underground dwellings once existed here, discovered and tragically destroyed in the 1800s during quarrying. Stamperland. A blend of old and new, where whispers of ancient settlements mingle with the clatter of modern life. A place where concrete bell towers stand as monuments to community spirit, and where green spaces offer glimpses into a forgotten past. A place that, like a well-loved book, reveals more of its secrets with every turn of the page.
