Seven gleaming steel forms pierce the sky before you. This, my friends, is the Stahl 68 sculpture. It’s a story of relocation, restoration, and resilience. Originally created by Erich Hauser, a celebrated German sculptor, Stahl 68 first graced the world stage at the Documenta 4 exhibition in Kassel in 1968. It then found a home in front of the Linden power plant in Hanover in 1970. There it stood for nearly 50 years, a silent sentinel against the backdrop of industrial activity. But progress, as it often does, necessitated change. In 2017, essential work on underground utilities at the power plant meant Stahl 68 had to be moved. The sculpture was carefully disassembled and placed in storage while the city sought a new location. The district of Kirchrode-Bemerode-Wülferode championed the cause, proposing several potential sites. Finally, in 2021, Stahl 68 was reborn here at Gutspark Bemerode. But before it could be unveiled, it underwent a meticulous restoration. Each of the seven steel elements was cleaned, repaired, and treated to protect against future wear. A new stainless-steel base was also installed. This restoration, along with the move and installation, cost around 34,000 euros. Now, Stahl 68 stands revitalized, a testament to the enduring power of art and the dedication of a community. Take a moment to appreciate its abstract form, the way the light plays on the polished steel. It’s a piece of Hanover’s history, reimagined for a new generation.
