“School by the water tower” they call it. That is the Stadtteilschule Stellingen. Established in 1979, the Stadtteilschule Stellingen stands as a pillar of education in Hamburg. Originally located on Lutterothstraße, the school moved to Brehmweg in Stellingen. The Berufsschule moved into the location in Lutterothstraße.
In 1979, it transformed into Gesamtschule Stellingen. The Hamburger Schulreform in 2010 renamed it Stadtteilschule Sportplatzring/Stellingen. Later, it became simply Stadtteilschule Stellingen. Since 2013, the Stadtteilschule Stellingen is a full-time school. Classes run from 8 AM to 4 PM.
The Stadtteilschule Stellingen is on Brehmweg 60. It sits between Högen and Hagenbeckstraße. The buildings at Brehmweg opened in 1974. Neue Heimat Norddeutscher Städtebau GmbH was the developer. Neue Heimat planned the school with similar schools on Nydamer Weg and Wrangelstraße. All had hexagonal classrooms.
The grounds shared by the Stadtteilschule and Grundschule Brehmweg cover 55,914 square meters. The area has many buildings. Original structures from the 1970s include classrooms, a triple sports hall, and an administration area. In 2015, a double sports hall and a cafeteria were added. The old “Wabengebäude” was torn down. A new classroom building with 21 rooms and common areas replaced it.
Stellingen, Eimsbüttel, Eidelstedt, and Lokstedt are the main catchment areas for the Stadtteilschule Stellingen. Lurup and Niendorf also contribute students. In 2011, the school had a social index of 3. By 2021, it rose to 4. In 2016, around 54% of students had a migrant background. This was slightly above the Hamburg average.
The Stadtteilschule Stellingen offers five upper-level profiles. These include Biology, Fine Arts, Economics, PGW, and Sports/Biology. Since 2005, the school has offered bilingual German/Spanish instruction. Starting in fifth grade, students take two subjects mainly in Spanish. Many students come from the bilingual classes of Grundschule Lutterothstraße. The Spanish government supports the bilingual program.
The Stadtteilschule Stellingen has many projects. Through “Kulturagenten für kreative Schulen”, it has realized art projects. Fifth-graders take sailing lessons. Sixth-graders learn ice hockey. In 2006, the school won an award for its partnership with Budnikowsky. The school has also won the Bertini-Preis and other awards.
Several notable people attended the Stadtteilschule Stellingen. These include entertainer Olli Schulz, musician Boris Lauterbach, soccer player Patrick Owomoyela, and rapper Nate57.
