Did you ever hear a library whisper secrets? The Stadtbibliothek Flensburg whispers many. It stands within the Flensburg Galerie. Yet its story begins long before this modern shopping center. The Stadtbibliothek Flensburg first opened its doors in 1905. Imagine the hushed excitement as Flensburg’s citizens explored its first collection. For years, the library resided within the Deutschen Haus, nestled in its library wing. In 1962, the Stadtbibliothek Flensburg claimed its independence. It moved to a brand new building at Süderhofenden 40/42. This marked a significant transformation. The library became a Freihand-Bibliothek, allowing visitors to browse the shelves themselves. Interestingly, the building also housed the Naturwissenschaftliche Museum Flensburg. For a time, knowledge of the natural world and the world of books lived side by side. Changes continued. In 1998, the museum moved to Museumsberg Flensburg. The Stadtbibliothek Flensburg expanded into the vacated space. Sadly, this location was short-lived. In 2004, the building was demolished for a shopping center. The library temporarily relocated to Angelburger Straße. Then in 2007, the Stadtbibliothek Flensburg found its current home on the second floor of the Flensburg Galerie. Today, the Stadtbibliothek Flensburg holds around 120,000 items. Books, magazines, and audiovisual materials await discovery. The focus is on popular literature, offering something for everyone. A dedicated children’s library nurtures young readers. Nearly all materials are readily accessible, creating a welcoming atmosphere for exploration. The library provides internet access, further expanding its resources. It even offers e-books, e-audios, e-videos, and e-papers, bringing the library’s collection into the digital age. A bookmobile extends the library’s reach, bringing books to the community. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, the interlibrary loan service can borrow it from another library. The Stadtbibliothek Flensburg has seen many changes over the years. It has moved from place to place. It has adapted to the changing times. But one thing remains constant. Its dedication to bringing the world of stories and knowledge to the people of Flensburg.
