Seven meters tall and shining bright. What could this be? This is Stadt der Sterne No 8, one of Stralsund’s illuminated stars. Welcome to a spectacle that lights up the winter.

Stralsund transforms into Stadt der Sterne each winter. The initiative started in 2020 with five large stars. They brought light and cheer during the darkest time of year. Since then, more stars joined in. In total there are 26 big stars in all parts of town. Each star stands over seven meters tall.

Mayor Alexander Badrow is the instigator and patron. He wants Stralsund to shine brightly. The stars stay up until February 2nd. They bring warmth to the hearts of locals and visitors. These huge stars are made by the Masson company. The company is located just outside of Stralsund.

Susanna Masson, the company manager, said something special. Even though their stars travel internationally, Stralsund is unique. It is the only city where every district has its own star.

There are also smaller stars in the city. You can find them in the towers of St. Marien and St. Nikolai churches. Also there is one at the hospice and the Catholic parish. These stars are only two meters across. But they hang very high. Getting them up there is a real challenge.

The idea is that the city should be radiant. The town shines like stars in the sky are reflected. The installation encourages people to walk around. The stars are great for taking photos. Share your pictures using #StralsundStadtderSterne.

The city also puts up Christmas trees. Children from local kindergartens decorate them with love. Ten extra fir trees are planted. So they can grow into real Christmas trees in different places.

Stralsund also boasts the oldest Christmas market on the Baltic Sea. It takes place in the historic old town. The market is on the Old Market Square. St. Nikolai Church, the Town Hall, and the Commandantenhus oversee the festive scene.

The tradition of the Christmas market goes back a long time. In 1512, Duke Bogislaw X allowed the council to move the market. It had been held on St. Vitus Day in June. Now it was to be held on St. Nicholas Day in December.

These stars remind us of Stralsund’s commitment. They show how the city comes together. The Stadt der Sterne No 8 Installation is more than just a display. It is a symbol of hope. It is a beacon of light in the winter. It illuminates Stralsund and brings joy to all.
