Did you know that the colossal Shah Alam Stadium once held the title of the largest stadium in Malaysia? Standing proudly in Shah Alam Selangor Malaysia this architectural marvel has witnessed incredible sporting moments. Its story began on January 1 1990 when construction commenced. This ambitious project cost a staggering RM480 million. The stadium’s grand opening on July 16 1994 featured international friendlies. Teams like Bayern Munich and Leeds United graced its pitch. The first goal was scored by Billy McKinlay of Dundee United. Despite the initial fanfare early attendance was disappointing. Only around 5000 spectators attended each game.

The Shah Alam Stadium wasn’t just a football arena. It also boasted athletics facilities. It served as the home ground for the Selangor football club also known as the Red Giants. This team played there from 1994 to 2020. The stadium’s immense size is truly breathtaking. It could hold 80372 spectators. That’s more people than live in many towns! Its design inspired by the Poljud stadium in Split Croatia showcased a frame structure. This structure is recognized as the longest free-standing arc in the world. Architect Hijjas Kasturi masterminded this architectural feat. The stadium had 5500 parking bays and even included a go-kart racing circuit. Universiti Teknologi MARA’s Faculty of Performing Arts even temporarily used a section of it as a building!

Over the years the Shah Alam Stadium underwent several renovations. In 2011 RM34 million was spent on upgrading lighting repairing the roof and replacing vandalized seats. A further RM24 million was invested in 2014 for additional improvements. However despite these efforts long-term neglect led to disrepair. By 2020 the stadium’s condition was so poor that the Malaysian Football League considered banning it from hosting matches. Safety concerns especially regarding the polycarbonate roof and the pitch’s poor state were major issues.

The Selangor government decided to take action. They appointed Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) to revamp the entire stadium complex. This massive project costing RM787 million is set to transform the venue. The demolition started in July 2024 with a planned reopening in 2026. The Shah Alam Stadium is slated to become the Shah Alam Sports Complex. This ambitious project demonstrates the city’s commitment to revitalizing this sporting landmark. When it reopens it will be a testament to the evolution of sports infrastructure in Shah Alam. It’s a story of ambition setbacks and resilience. A story that unfolds before you right here at the heart of Shah Alam.
