Devotion in bronze is presented before us at the Stadionbauer-Denkmal. This monument honors those who rebuilt the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. It especially honors the fans’ dedication.
The Stadion An der Alten Försterei is the home of 1. FC Union Berlin. The stadium’s history stretches back to 1920. Back then, it served as a replacement for SC Union Oberschöneweide’s original ground. It was needed for housing construction.
Initially known as Sadowa-Platz, the stadium got its current name. It was named after the adjacent forest house, the “Alte Försterei”. Over the decades, the stadium saw various changes. It was a constant home for Union Berlin.
After the Berlin Wall came down, the stadium fell into disrepair. The city lacked funds for necessary renovations. In the early 2000s, fans rallied to save their beloved ground. They formed an initiative called proAF.
The “Stadiongründer” campaign was launched in 2005. This allowed fans to contribute financially to the stadium’s renovation. Fans could purchase “Gründersteine”. These “foundation stones” were placed in the “Tunnel of Fame”. It served as a lasting tribute to their support.
Major renovations began in 2008. Approximately 2000 volunteers contributed almost 140000 hours. The Stadionbauer-Denkmal recognizes this extraordinary effort. It symbolizes the fans’ commitment to their club. The stadium was officially reopened in July 2009. It was celebrated with a friendly match against Hertha BSC.
The stadium has a capacity of 22012. There are 18395 standing and 3617 seated places. The “Waldseite”, “Gegengerade”, and “Wuhleseite” are standing terraces. The main grandstand is on the west side. It includes the V.I.P. area.
The Stadion An der Alten Försterei hosts more than just football matches. Since 2003, it has been the site of an annual Christmas carol singing event. In 2014, it gained international attention. Guests could bring their sofas onto the pitch. They watched World Cup games on a large screen together.
