Born from the rubble of a wartime prison the Stadion am Quenz stands tall. Its story is etched in concrete and grass a testament to resilience and sporting spirit. This isn’t just a stadium it’s a living monument to the city of Brandenburg an der Havel.

Constructed between 1952 and 1955 by the Brandenburg steel and rolling mill the Stadion am Quenz initially lacked an official name. It was built for the BSG Stahl Brandenburg their home ground. Locals however often referred to it as the Stadion der Aktivisten after a nearby street. The name Stahlstadion eventually became more popular. The stadium’s foundations were surprisingly built from the debris of a prisoner of war camp that once occupied the site. A sobering yet powerful beginning to a place of sporting triumph.

The Stadion am Quenz saw significant expansion. The 1970s saw the addition of seven stands. A speaker tower was constructed. A tribune for 1800 spectators was built on the opposite side. Later seating capacity expanded to 2000. The overall stadium capacity increased to 12000 then later 15000. Further upgrades followed after Stahl Brandenburg’s promotion to the DDR-Oberliga in 1984. A main grandstand with 800 covered seats was added. The standing areas in the curves were expanded. By 1986 an electronic scoreboard was installed. Floodlights weren’t added until 1996.

The stadium hosted significant events. On April 30 1967 it hosted the DDR Football Cup final. 10000 people watched BSG Motor Zwickau beat FC Hansa Rostock 3-0. A smaller crowd of 3000 witnessed the East German national team defeat Czechoslovakia 2-0 in a 1987 international match. The stadium also hosted junior national football matches and rugby internationals including a 1989 match where East Germany lost to Czechoslovakia 19-38. A 2006 match pitted Germany against the Welsh amateur team. The stadium’s attendance record was a staggering 18000 set during a 1986 UEFA Cup match between BSG Stahl and IFK Gothenburg which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Following the economic changes of 1990 the steelworks withdrew from funding. The city of Brandenburg took over the stadium. Its name changed to Stadion am Quenz in January 1993. In 1996 the cinder track was replaced with a new artificial surface and the floodlights were commissioned. A notable change was the conversion of the 1986 scoreboard into a manually operated one in 2008-09. This was due to the poor condition of the original. The opposing grandstand was renovated in the summer of 2010. The floodlight masts were sadly removed in 2017. They were deemed unsafe due to high renovation costs.

Today the Stadion am Quenz boasts a capacity of 15500. It comprises about 3000 covered and 1000 uncovered seats. BSG Stahl Brandenburg continues to play its home games here. The athletics facilities are used by the VfL Brandenburg an athletics club formed from the former BSG Stahl section. More than just a stadium it’s a legacy a story written in victories defeats and the enduring spirit of Brandenburg an der Havel.
