Stadio Colombo-Gianetti is more than just a sports venue. It is a symbol of Saronno’s identity. It has a rich history woven into the fabric of this community.
The stadium opened its gates in 1931. It quickly became the heart of Saronno’s sporting life. Gaetano Gianetti, the first president of Saronno Foot-Ball Club donated the land. His contribution cemented his legacy. The design reflected the architectural style of the Fascist era. It served multiple purposes. It hosted football matches athletic events and public gatherings.
Originally named Stadio del Littorio it was renamed in 1947. It honored Emilio Colombo a Saronno journalist. Later Gaetano Gianetti’s name was added to the stadium’s title. This recognized his contribution to the town’s sports.
For over five decades the stadium remained largely unchanged. In 1990 renovations became necessary. Saronno was climbing the ranks of Italian professional football. A new uncovered stand was built on the east side. The existing west stand was slightly expanded.
However the fortunes of Stadio Colombo-Gianetti declined in later years. In June 2000 the mayor revoked Saronno’s use of the stadium. The club failed to pay rent. The stadium fell into disrepair.
Despite these setbacks Stadio Colombo-Gianetti continued to serve the community. Several local teams used it as their home ground. From 2010 to 2017 Robur Saronno played here. In 2011 and 2012 Cistellum also used the stadium.
By 2015 Stadio Colombo-Gianetti was in a sorry state. The uncovered stand was unsafe. It was overgrown with weeds. Access to the covered stand was limited to only 99 spectators. The main football team Saronno was denied use of the stadium. Officials deemed it too degraded.
Recognizing the urgent need for action the local government stepped in. In late 2015 they launched a project to restore and improve the stadium. The work included structural repairs to the covered stand. The athletics track was upgraded. New entrances and exits were added.
In early 2018 the renovated covered stand was completed. It featured new multi-colored seating. From the following season Saronno once again played their home games here. Today the Stadio Colombo-Gianetti has a capacity of 1300. The west stand has 1500 seats. The east stand can accommodate 2500 fans. Around the pitch is a six-lane running track. It is used by the local athletics club.
But Stadio Colombo-Gianetti is not just for sports. In 1983 it hosted a concert by Vasco Rossi. It was part of his Bollicine tour.
