“Home sweet home,” I thought as I imagined the roar of the crowd. We are at Stade de Genève. It stands as Geneva’s premier stadium. It is also known as Stade de la Praille.
Stade de Genève completed construction in 2003. Zschokke Construction S.A. built it. The stadium’s construction cost CHF 240 million. That was quite an investment back then.
Normally, Servette FC calls this stadium home. This Swiss football team fills the stadium with passion. Stade de Genève has hosted international friendlies. Argentina played England here in 2005. England won 3–2. Brazil defeated New Zealand 4–0 here in 2006.
The stadium was a UEFA Euro 2008 venue. Three group-stage matches took place here. Turkey played a memorable match against the Czech Republic. Rugby union has also graced this pitch. Bourgoin played Munster here in a Heineken Cup match.
In 2016, the stadium received heated hybrid turf. Mixto Hybrid Grass now covers the field. This caters to Servette’s football and rugby needs. The new turf installation delayed Servette’s home games.
All 30,000 seats were replaced during the 2019–20 season. Brand new burgundy seats now fill the stands. The old seats had faded to a pinkish gray. A standing section was added in the North stand. It now accommodates about 500 fans.
The Stade de Genève hosted the semi-finals and final of the 2022–23 UEFA Youth League.
On January 11, 2014, the National League A played its second Winter Classic here. Genève-Servette HC faced Lausanne HC. A sellout crowd of 29,400 attended.
The Stade de Genève hosted several UEFA Euro 2008 matches. Portugal defeated Turkey 2–0 here. Portugal also beat the Czech Republic 3–1. Turkey triumphed over the Czech Republic 3–2.
UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 will also be held here. Denmark will face Sweden here. Portugal will play Italy here too. Finland is scheduled to play against Switzerland here. A quarter-final and semi-final match will also occur here.
Many international matches have occurred at Stade de Genève. Switzerland has played many games here. Italy, France and Albania have also played here. England defeated Argentina here. Brazil won against New Zealand here.
The stadium has seen music legends. Johnny Hallyday performed here many times. The Police and Celine Dion have also graced this stage. Mylène Farmer and Bruce Springsteen have performed here too.
Servette FC took over the stadium’s operation. The Fondation du Stade de Genève had managed it previously. The Grand Conseil Genevois granted an annual subsidy to avoid bankruptcy.
Stade de Genève has 30,000 covered seats. It has four stands and a main stand with five levels. The VIP area has 1,228 business seats and 27 private boxes. The press area can host over 200 journalists.
The stadium is more than just concrete and seats. It is a place where memories are etched into our hearts. The echoes of cheers resonate long after the game ends. It is a symbol of Geneva’s sporting spirit.
