A bishop’s journey concluded here. Let’s delve into the story of St. Wolfgang. This church is named after Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg. He was a significant figure in the 10th century. Wolfgang served as bishop of Regensburg from Christmas 972 until his death. He was canonized as a saint in 1052.

Wolfgang’s early life involved studying at Reichenau Abbey. He developed a close friendship with Henry. Henry later became Archbishop of Trier. Wolfgang taught at Henry’s cathedral school. He aided Henry’s efforts to reform the clergy.

After Henry’s death, Wolfgang became a Benedictine monk. He joined an abbey in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. He was ordained as a priest. He became director of the monastery school. Wolfgang was then sent to Hungary as a missionary. His efforts had limited success.

Emperor Otto II appointed Wolfgang as Bishop of Regensburg. Wolfgang initiated reforms of the clergy and religious life. He preached with vigor and effectiveness. He always showed special concern for the poor. Wolfgang wore a monk’s habit. He lived an austere life.

The monastic life always called to him. He desired solitude. He briefly left his diocese for prayer. His duties as bishop called him back.

In 994, Wolfgang became ill during a journey. He died in Puppingen near Linz, Austria. Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg was canonized in 1052. His feast day is widely celebrated in Central Europe.

Wolfgang is sometimes counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers. He is the patron saint of paralyzed people, stroke victims, and carpenters.

Consider Saint Wolfgang’s life. He used his life to spread the Good News and joy of Jesus. Each day is a precious gift from God. We should show our love and praise for him in every action.
