Gazing upon St. Vitalis Church, can you sense the echoes of history? This unassuming church, nestled within Salzburg, holds the story of a remarkable man. St. Vitalis, the second Bishop of Salzburg and Abbot of St. Peter’s, stepped into the shoes of his predecessor, St. Rupert. His life, shrouded in some mystery, is pieced together through historical accounts and legends. St. Vitalis is known as the “Apostle of Pinzgau”. He bravely continued St. Rupert’s missionary work, venturing into the Pinzgau region. He established monastic cells, spreading the word and strengthening the Christian community. One captivating legend tells of a lily miraculously sprouting from a rock, a symbol now associated with St. Vitalis. He is often depicted with this very lily, growing from his heart, a testament to his unwavering faith. His leadership extended beyond the spiritual realm. Under his guidance, Salzburg received the gift of Henndorf and its surrounding woodlands from Duke Hugbert of Bavaria. St. Vitalis was a shepherd to his people, a respected leader during turbulent times. His dedication and compassion resonated throughout the community. He tirelessly worked to rebuild communities ravaged by Hunnic and Slavic invasions. He preached the gospel of peace and love, converting many and rekindling the faith of others. He mediated disputes, reconciled enemies, and fostered unity wherever he went. Though his life ended on October 20th sometime before 730, his legacy lives on. He was laid to rest in St. Peter’s Church, his tomb marked by a memorial slab from 1497, later redesigned in 1762. Two altars in the transept further honor his memory: the smaller Klein-Vitalis-Altar houses his relics and a gilded statue. The larger altar features an impressive tomb sculpture crafted in 1497. This piece, considered one of Salzburg’s most significant medieval sculptures, depicts the bishop in the midst of a sermon. The canonization process for St. Vitalis, initiated between 1459 and 1462, remains unfinished. However, his devotion was officially recognized in 1628 by Pope Urban VIII, and his name is included in the Martyrologium Romanum. He remains the patron saint of Pinzgau, children, and pregnant women. St. Vitalis’s presence can still be felt in Salzburg. The Pfarrkirche Salzburg-St. Vitalis, a modern church in the Kendlersiedlung, bears his name. It stands as a tangible reminder of this devoted bishop, continuing his legacy of faith and community.
