The story of St Thomas Orthodox Cathedral Dubai is one of growth and perseverance. It began humbly in 1968. A small group of Orthodox Christians gathered for services. Their faith was their anchor in a new land. This small gathering was officially inaugurated on December 2nd 1968. It’s a remarkable journey. From a handful of families to a parish of over 3500 today.
Initially meetings were held in members’ homes. Later the Women’s Society Hall became a temporary sanctuary. The need for a permanent church grew with the community. This led to significant outreach. The then Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum generously donated land in 1972. This pivotal moment marked the start of construction.
The first church building was completed in 1976. It could hold around 300 people. This wasn’t enough for long. The congregation continued to flourish. A much larger church was built and consecrated in 1992. Further expansion in 2006 added a balcony and even more space.
In 2003 St Thomas Orthodox Church was elevated to cathedral status. This signified its importance within the Malankara Orthodox Church. This designation was a well deserved recognition. It reflected the dedication and growth of the community. A multi-storied complex was added in 2013. It houses an auditorium and other facilities.
