A century and a half of whispered prayers. That’s the legacy of St Thomas English Church in Chennai. Standing proudly on Santhome High Road this church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and a remarkable history.

St Thomas English Church isn’t just any church. It holds a special place in the history of Chennai. This oldest Protestant church in San Thome has witnessed centuries of devotion. Its story begins long before its 1842 consecration. The area itself San Thome has a rich past. Named after Saint Thomas the Apostle this land changed hands between the Portuguese Dutch and British.

The church’s roots trace back to the Vepery Mission the oldest Church of England Mission in India. Rev Robert Carver a Methodist missionary from Ceylon played a pivotal role. He secured the support of Sir Thomas Munro the Governor of Fort St George. Carver’s dedication ensured the church’s construction. He even lies buried under the altar a silent guardian of this sacred space.

The church served the Protestant elite of Madras. The Governor had his own pew. It was a place of worship for residents of Adyar’s garden houses. For many years the church’s incumbency was filled by Secretaries of the S P G Madras. Notably by A R Symonds J M Strachan and others. Rev David Chellappa the second Bishop of Madras Diocese of the Church of South India was its first Indian minister.

St Thomas English Church has seen numerous ministers. From Rev Robert Carver to Rev Anitha Christian. Each one has left their mark adding to the church’s rich tapestry. The church’s congregation included Europeans Anglo-Indians and English-speaking Indians.

In 1942 the church celebrated its centenary. It wasn’t a grand celebration. Times were challenging. Yet the small but devoted congregation kept the flame of faith burning. The Church of South India’s formation in 1947 brought St Thomas English Church under its umbrella. The church continues to thrive with its outreach activities.

More than a place of worship St Thomas English Church in Chennai is a silent witness to history. It stands as a symbol of faith community and the enduring spirit of Chennai. Its walls have heard countless prayers and seen generations come and go. Yet it stands firm a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of belief.
