Look closely at the facade of St Thomas Anglican Church, its dark brown bricks punctuated by cream accents. It’s almost a statement about Toowong’s history – how the neighborhood evolved from an elite haven to a bustling community. You see, St Thomas was once a prominent figure in the development of Toowong. The parish was established in 1870 and a desire for a more permanent building led to the construction of St Thomas in 1877. But the church faced a challenge – they needed to raise a considerable sum of money, roughly £850, to complete the construction. This was no easy feat, considering the Church of England in Australia had lost state aid after Queensland separated in 1859. This left religious institutions in the country seeking to raise funds on their own. St Thomas made a clever move – they rented out pews, ensuring a consistent source of income. However, this also sparked discussions about elitism. Despite the challenges, St Thomas has stood tall, a testament to community spirit and a beacon of faith in Toowong’s heart.
