St Thomas’ Anglican Church, right before your eyes, is one such testament, a grand dame of Musgrave Road celebrating a legacy of faith spanning over 160 years. The story begins in 1864 with a humble structure on Ridge Road, a far cry from the church’s current grandeur. This original St Thomas’ Church, crafted from timber and corrugated iron, was a gift from Mrs. Danby Harcourt of England. Interestingly, it was intended for Congella, but thanks to the efforts of Reverend E. Rivett, the building found its home here on the Berea. The old St Thomas’ served the community until 1899 when the current St Thomas’ on Musgrave Road was erected. However, the story doesn’t end there. By 1928, time had taken its toll, and the original church on Ridge Road, sadly, had to be demolished. Today, St Thomas’ Anglican Church stands not just as a place of worship, but as a symbol of resilience, generosity, and the enduring spirit of faith in the heart of Durban.
