The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. A gentle breeze rustles the leaves of nearby trees. Welcome to St Theresa’s Church a place of peace and devotion in the heart of Chennai.
St Theresa’s Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith. It stands as a symbol of the strong Catholic community in Perambur. This church is under the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore. Approximately 900 families are part of this parish.
The story of St Theresa’s Church is a journey. It began in 1967 in Madumanagar. People built a church dedicated to St Teresa of Child Jesus. Initially it was under the Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine Parish. In 1994 it became an independent parish. Father Basil a Salesian priest led the way. He secured land in Sembiam. He oversaw the construction of the beautiful church we see today. Archbishop Aruldos James consecrated the new church.
After nine years of Salesian leadership the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore took over. Father Inigo the first diocesan priest added a grotto and parish house. He introduced the devotion of the Infant Jesus. A statue from Prague became a focal point of prayer and pilgrimage. Father Inigo also built a blessing tower at the entrance. Subsequent priests continued improvements. Father KT Matthew built a guesthouse. Father Stephen focused on the interior architecture.
The devotion here is palpable. People from all over Chennai come to St Theresa’s Church. They seek solace and spiritual renewal. Many come for the Infant Jesus devotion. The church hosts special events. The first of the month is dedicated to St Theresa. Thursdays honor the Infant Jesus. First Fridays are for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. First Saturdays celebrate Mother Mary. The 24th of the month is dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians. The church festival celebrating St Theresa’s feast is a highlight. It takes place on the first Sunday of October. Nine days of novena prayers and masses lead up to this grand celebration.
