St Suitbertus Church stands proudly in Dortmund’s Unionviertel. It’s a beacon of faith a testament to resilience. Founded in 1920 it addressed the needs of a growing community. Its first home was a repurposed iron hangar. Hardly glamorous but a start.
Under Pfarrer Heinrich Kalthoff the church flourished. Its vibrant community life unfortunately suffered under the Nazis. Then came the war. Devastating bombs obliterated the church. The congregation relocated to St Anna. A setback but not the end.
After the war a new temporary church was set up. It was located in a community hall. Finally in 1951 a new St Suitbertus was consecrated. It stood on the original foundations. A phoenix risen from the ashes.
In 1984 Pfarrer Wilhelm Terwei oversaw the construction of a new community center. It is adjacent to the church. The church and the center are joined. They serve as a center of the community. Since 1997 a Spanish-speaking congregation found a home at St Suitbertus. This revitalized the community centre. It brought new life to the area. It created a vibrant hub for Spanish speakers and their neighbors.
The church boasts a beautiful romantic-style organ. It was installed in 1991. The organ is a musical masterpiece. It was funded by parishioners. It’s one of Dortmund’s finest instruments. The organ’s sound fills the church. It’s truly a sound to behold. It inspires awe and reverence.
