A cornerstone of faith. That’s St Stephen Lutheran Church. Located at 1235 Lawndale Street in Detroit Michigan it stands as a testament to enduring community. For decades it has served as a spiritual anchor for its congregation and the wider community.

St Stephen Lutheran Church wasn’t always on Lawndale Street. It began in 1888. Reverend William A Sadtler established it. He was sent by the Ministerium of Pennsylvania. The church initially held services in a small building. This building was on Tatnall Street. Membership grew steadily. The church eventually moved to its current location. It was under the leadership of Reverend Park W Huntington. The beautiful Gothic-style stone church was built in 1927.

Growth continued. A parish house was needed. This need led to the construction of Frederick Memorial Hall. It’s attached to the church. The hall includes a chapel offices and Sunday school rooms. The church was incredibly active in the 1960s. It hosted Boy Scouts and Luther League meetings. A Saturday Club was also popular. About 100 local children attended for arts and crafts. The 75th anniversary was marked by a renovated chancel. A free-standing altar was added. St Stephen’s joined forces with other churches. They sponsored summer day camps and held joint worship services.

The 1970s brought a new Casavant organ. Eight special concerts celebrated its dedication. The 1980s saw the establishment of a food pantry. Church members volunteered their time. The 100th anniversary in 1988 saw the church support the Spirit of Life Lutheran Church. As the congregation aged an elevator was needed. In 1998 renovations included a larger chapel an elevator and hallways. These renovations greatly improved accessibility. The food pantry expanded becoming one of the largest in the state. In 2014 St Stephen’s partnered with Bootless Stageworks. This non-profit theater group created a 75-seat theater in the church.

Today St Stephen Lutheran Church continues its mission. It remains a vital part of the Detroit community. It offers a place of worship spiritual guidance and community support. The church’s history echoes with faith resilience and service. It shows the power of community and commitment. It’s a legacy that continues to thrive. It is a place of welcome for all.
