“What can I do?” That question echoes within the walls of St. Stephen AME Church. It is a call to action. It is a departure from passive consumption. Founded in 1918, St. Stephen AME Church stands as a beacon of faith and service on Detroit’s west side.

Bishop Charles Spencer Smith recognized a need. He envisioned an AME church to serve this community. Reverend T. J. White stepped up. He volunteered to lead the mission. With Evangelist Julia Hall’s enthusiastic help, they began the work. Thirteen charter members signed the Document of Organization on November 18. They gathered at Brother Walter James’ home. This marked the official beginning of St. Stephen AME Church.

In 1920, the church purchased land. It was located at the corner of Stanford and Cobb. They constructed a temporary building. It was made of tar paper. This humble structure housed the growing congregation.

St. Stephen AME Church has a history of stability. Since its founding, only thirteen pastors have led the church. Each pastor contributed to the church’s development. They expanded its reach. They maintained its traditions. These leaders fostered fellowship, family, and community service.

Among these dedicated leaders was Reverend Darryl Williams. He became the thirteenth pastor on October 1, 2017. He is a third-generation AME preacher.

St. Stephen AME Church played a role in Motown’s history. The Temptations and The Supremes practiced here. They honed their musical talents within these walls. Barry Gordy brought his daughter for music lessons. The church nurtured young talent. It contributed to Detroit’s vibrant music scene.

Lindsay Thaxton Jr. has been a lifelong member of St. Stephen AME Church. His wife joined in 1955, the year they married. Thaxton says that love and prayer make the difference at St. Stephen.

Over the years, St. Stephen AME Church has launched numerous programs. These include free summer day camps. They also offer college prep classes. The church operates a bountiful food pantry. These initiatives demonstrate the church’s commitment to serving the community.

The congregation has witnessed Detroit’s highs and lows. Reverend Darryl Williams stated they saw Detroit at its heyday and its worst.

Despite changes in the city and declining membership, the church’s spirit remains strong. Reverend Williams emphasizes that salvation is not just about going to heaven. It is about improving people’s overall quality of life. St. Stephen AME Church has always committed itself to that mission. The church continues to adapt. It meets the evolving needs of its community.
