Right here stands St. Spyridon of the Stadium. This church is not just another beautiful Athenian building. It carries stories of faith, resilience, and community.

St. Spyridon lived in the late third and early fourth centuries. He became Bishop of Trimithous in Cyprus. The saint participated in the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 AD. St. Spyridon died in 348 AD.

Interestingly, this church is also known as St. Spiridon of Pangrati. This is due to its location near the Panathenaic Stadium. The stadium hosted the first modern Olympic Games. Older documents call it “St. Spiridon of Frog Island”. That was the area’s name in the early 20th century.

The cornerstone for St. Spyridon of the Stadium was laid in 1903. It replaced a smaller church dedicated to St. Spiridon and St. Anthony. The famous architect Tsiller initially designed it. Financial difficulties between the World Wars caused revisions. The Greek Civil War also damaged the building. Renovations between 1985 and 1990 repaired the church. They also added a new marble floor and murals. The Parish Hall was built in 1961.

The architecture of St. Spyridon is Byzantine. It includes a dome and covers 466 square meters. The dome reaches 25 meters high. Constantinos Kotsis began the murals in the 1950s. Panagiotis and Alexandros Batas completed them in the 1990s.

St. Spyridon is dedicated to St. Spiridon the Miracle-worker. His relics are preserved on Corfu. He is the patron saint of Corfu. They call him “Saint Spyridon, the Keeper of the City”. He is believed to have expelled the plague from the island. St. Spyridon is also the patron saint of Piraeus.

St. Spyridon’s feast day is celebrated on December 12. Some Eastern Churches celebrate it on December 25. The West commemorates him on December 14.

Today, St. Spyridon serves a large parish. About 10% of the 2000 inhabitants are foreigners. Three priests and two chanters serve here. The church has a polyphonic choir. There is a Parish Board and a Ladies’ Philanthropic Council. Catechists instruct children in the Orthodox faith.

The church faces challenges typical of urban parishes. These include heavy traffic, isolation, and daily struggles. Yet, St. Spyridon strives to assist its parishioners. It preserves its historical, spiritual importance, vitality, and beauty. The church offers Orthodox witness to the modern world. It does so with love and deep faith in God.
