A poignant silence hangs in the air. This is St Simon’s RC Church. Or rather this was St Simon’s RC Church.

St Simon’s in Glasgow’s Partick boasts a rich history. Founded in 1858 it began as St Peter’s. It holds a special place in Glasgow’s heart. It’s the third oldest Catholic church in the city after all. Father Daniel Gallagher a significant figure founded it. He’s famously remembered for tutoring David Livingstone in Latin. Livingstone the famous explorer needed Latin for his medical studies.

The church’s Gothic architecture is stunning. Charles O’Neill designed the original building. Later Gillespie Kidd & Coia architects renovated it in 1956. The marble altar features a beautiful panel. Mortimer created this panel depicting Christ comforted by his mother. The church underwent extensive refurbishment between 2005 and 2008. Then tragedy struck.

An arson attack in 2021 gutted the entire church. It left behind only ashes and memories. A housing association bought the site. They plan to build affordable homes there. This is a huge loss for the city and its history. Yet the spirit of St Simon’s lives on.

The church served as a haven for Glasgow’s Polish community. Since World War II Polish soldiers and later immigrants used the church. They found solace and community within its walls. Two metal plaques outside the church stand as a testament. These plaques were placed by the Polish community in 1992. They expressed gratitude to Our Lady Queen of Poland and Father Tierney.

More than just a building St Simon’s was a living embodiment of faith. It was a place of worship and community. Its destruction is a heartbreak. But the memories and its significance will remain. The story of St Simon’s RC Church is a reminder of the fragility of history. It is also a reminder of the enduring strength of faith and community.
