Constructed between 1890 and 1893, St. Sebastian was designed to accommodate the burgeoning Catholic community. Today, St. Sebastian offers around 600 seats, shared with Berlin’s Croatian-speaking community. The church’s story begins in the late 18th century with the Catholic community of the Invalidenhaus. This community eventually led to the founding of the St. Sebastian parish in 1861. Initially, services were held in the St. Sebastian Chapel of the Invalidenhaus, a gift from Frederick II in 1748. It wasn’t until 1890 that construction began on the current St. Sebastian Church, on a site that once served as a gallows square. Designed by architect Max Hasak, the church echoes the design of the Elisabethkirche in Marburg. St. Sebastian has witnessed significant moments in Berlin’s history. In 1943, the funeral procession of Dompropst Bernhard Lichtenberg, who died en route to a concentration camp, departed from St. Sebastian. Later that year, Allied bombings ravaged the church, leaving it in ruins. The church was meticulously rebuilt and served as a temporary cathedral while St. Hedwig’s Cathedral was under reconstruction. St. Sebastian has seen the enthronement of bishops and the funerals of prominent figures. The construction of the Berlin Wall dramatically impacted the parish, placing St. Sebastian on the geographical edge of the city. Subsequent urban renewal further altered the community’s composition. Through it all, St. Sebastian Church has endured, its neo-Gothic architecture a testament to its resilience. The 87-meter tower, crowned with a pointed spire, dominates the skyline. Look closely at the tower and you might spot a carved stone image of a crab. This commemorates a generous donation from a parishioner named Krebs, whose contribution helped fund the roof and a portion of the tower. The vibrant stained-glass windows, the intricate altar, and the grand organ all contribute to the church’s majesty.
