Picture this a majestic Romanesque Revival church standing proudly. This is St Rose of Lima Church in Washington Heights Manhattan. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and a vibrant community.
Established in July 1901 by Archbishop Michael A Corrigan St Rose of Lima initially served a growing Catholic population. An earlier St Rose of Lima church existed on the Lower East Side but was demolished. This new church became a beacon of hope.
The construction of St Rose of Lima began in 1902. Architect Joseph H McGuire designed the beautiful brick and stone structure. It was completed in 1905. Cardinal Farley dedicated the church on December 10 1905. A rectory was built next door. It was finished in 1904. The total cost for the church and rectory was $86000. This was a significant investment for its time. Later a school and convent were added expanding the parish’s reach.
The church has seen many pastors. Rev Edward T McGinley was the first. Rev Ramon Lopez is the current pastor. The parish school sadly closed in June 2019. The convent now houses Centro Altagracia de Fe y Justicia a Roman Catholic agency devoted to faith and social justice. The Centro Altagracia represents the church’s ongoing commitment to its community.
