Picture this. You are standing before St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Its imposing presence speaks of a vibrant history. A history rooted in faith and community.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church wasn’t always this grand edifice. It began humbly on September 29 1981. Archbishop Patrick F. Flores decreed its establishment. It was carved from the western sections of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Its early days were far from luxurious. Imagine 350 families. They gathered initially in the Pete and Bernice Pavilion. An old barracks building later served as a temporary worship space. This lasted for five years. This humble beginning belies the church’s growth.

The year 1987 marked a turning point. The construction of the present parish hall. This served as both a meeting place and worship space until 2005. The dedication of the current church. This occurred in 2005. Archbishop Jose H. Gomez officiated. The church is now one of the largest in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. This reflects the church’s incredible growth. It grew from 350 families to well over two thousand.

But St. Rose of Lima is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to community. The founding pastor Monsignor Kevin Ryan served from 1981 to 1991. He oversaw the acquisition of 10.3 acres of land. This laid the foundation for future growth. Several other leaders followed. Monsignor Juan I. Alfaro served from 1991 to 2016. He guided the expansion adding more land for the church. Father Virgil Elizondo served as parochial vicar. He contributed significantly until his passing in 2016. The current pastor Very Reverend Father Victory Valdez began his service in 2021.

Many groups and organizations were formed alongside the church’s growth. A Ladies Society and Men’s Club. These were established in 1981 and 1982 respectively. The St. Vincent de Paul Society also emerged. This was formed to assist the needy within the parish boundaries. The annual parish festival ROSEFEST began in 1982. It continues to be a beloved tradition.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church stands as a symbol of faith. Its story is one of growth perseverance and community spirit. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. It continues to serve a large and thriving community. This is more than a building. It is a living testament to enduring faith.
