The St Rochus-Hospital’s history began in 1868. Four Franciscan sisters from Salzkotten arrived. They took on the task of caring for the sick. A year later the hospital opened its doors. Five sisters tended to 30 patients. The humble beginnings contrast sharply with the modern facility before us.
Growth was swift. By 1912 after several expansions over 2000 patients received care. The hospital adapted to the needs of a booming industrial region. The Ruhrgebiet with its mines and steel mills needed medical attention. An accident ward a lab and even a bathing and radiation facility were added in the mid-1950s.
This wasn’t just basic care. In 1966 a groundbreaking event occurred. The first pacemaker was implanted. Three years later a heavily used cancer counseling center opened. Even an emergency medical vehicle joined the ranks in 1980. St. Rochus-Hospital was at the forefront of medical innovation.
The Franciscan sisters served for 115 years. They left the hospital in 1983. Their departure marked a pivotal shift. But it also paved the way for modernization. Between 1987 and 1993 a significant expansion and partial rebuild occurred. This cost 46.9 million DM. The hospital embraced the future.
Mergers and collaborations shaped the hospital’s subsequent evolution. It joined with the Catholic Hospital Dortmund West. This created the Catholic Hospital Association Castrop/Dortmund West. Then in 2004 a further merging occurred. St. Rochus-Hospital became part of the Catholic St. Lukas Society. This brought together hospitals and care facilities. It was a powerful force in the region.
The St. Rochus-Hospital continued its development. In 2005 it became a founding member of the Ruhr Intestine Center. A new central warehouse opened in 2010. It supplied all facilities within the Catholic St Lukas Society. The hospital’s commitment to cutting edge care never wavered.
Today the St Rochus-Hospital stands tall. It provides comprehensive services. It has a medical supply center handling radiology. It boasts numerous departments: acute and emergency medicine internal medicine general and vascular surgery orthopedics and trauma surgery plastic surgery gynecology obstetrics anesthesiology intensive care and pain therapy. It is a beacon of hope and healing.
