St Philip and St James, a haven of peace amidst the urban sprawl, stands proudly in Booterstown, Dublin. Its history is woven intricately with the lives of the people who have called the area home for centuries. Founded in 1821, this place of worship has witnessed the changing landscapes and fortunes of the community. Its foundation was made possible by George Augustus Herbert, the 11th Earl of Pembroke, who generously donated the site and a substantial sum towards its construction. The church, a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture, was built between 1821 and 1824 under the guidance of John Bowden, with his student Joseph Welland completing the project after Bowden’s unfortunate passing in 1822. The church was consecrated on May 16, 1824, by the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. William Magee. Today, St Philip and St James continues to be a beacon of faith and community spirit, standing as a testament to the enduring power of shared belief and the resilience of the human spirit.
