“Ever feel like your life’s a tangled mess?” Welcome to St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg. It is more than just a church. It is a sanctuary of peace and a testament to faith.

St. Peter am Perlach stands tall as one of Augsburg’s oldest churches. Its history stretches back to the 11th century. This romanesque Catholic church sits in Augsburg’s heart. Together with the Augsburg Town Hall, its tower is the landmark of Augsburg.

Step inside St. Peter. You will find a unique oasis. The church offers a quiet escape from the city’s bustle. Many locals and tourists visit it daily. They seek solace and admire its beauty. The entrance is a bit hidden. It is on the Fischmarkt opposite the town hall.

The church’s architecture reflects its rich history. The three naves of the Romanesque hall church are still visible. They remind us of its great age. Look for the small terracotta figure of Jesus Christ. It dates back to around 1200. It is in the entrance area.

But the real draw is the painting of Mary. Created around 1700, it depicts Mary as the Madonna of the Knot. She is also known as the knot-looser. This image is not just art. It is a symbol of hope. It represents Mary untying the knots of our lives.

The story behind this painting is fascinating. Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel donated the altar with the image. He was a canon of St. Peter. The painting commemorates a family event. His grandfather was on the verge of separating from his wife. He sought help from a Jesuit priest. The priest prayed to Mary to untie the knots of their marital problems. Peace was restored. The couple stayed together.

The painting shows Mary untying knots from a long ribbon. She crushes a snake’s head with her foot. This symbolizes her triumph over evil. It represents the untying of Eve’s disobedience through Mary’s obedience.

Pope Francis has a deep connection to this image. Since 1986, he has admired the Madonna of the Knot. He promoted its veneration in Argentina. From there, it spread throughout South America. Many people from those countries visit Augsburg. They want to see the original painting and pray before it.

The citizens of Augsburg have played a vital role in preserving St. Peter. A citizens’ association was founded in 1780. It prevented the church’s demolition after the dissolution of the monastery. They still care for the church today.

Little is known about the exact circumstances of the founding of a fraternity at St. Peter’s. In the tradition, a mass in 1780 is mentioned. With the dissolution of the monastery of St. Peter, the church was initially to be demolished, which was prevented by the resistance of individual members of the Mass League. From this group of citizens of the city of Augsburg, some have agreed to take care of the upkeep of the church.

The feast of Our Lady, Untier of Knots, is celebrated on September 28th.

As you leave St. Peter am Perlach, remember the message of hope. Mary, Untier of Knots, offers solace and help. She assists in untangling the challenges of life. This church is not just a landmark. It is a beacon of faith and resilience.
