Did you know that St Petrus Canisius in Stuttgart is connected to a truly remarkable figure? This church stands as a silent testament to the life and work of Saint Peter Canisius a pivotal figure in the Counter-Reformation. He wasn’t just any priest. He was known as the second Apostle of Germany.

St Petrus Canisius played a monumental role in strengthening the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation. This wasn’t an easy task. The Protestant Reformation had swept through Germany leaving the Catholic faith seemingly on the verge of extinction. Canisius however faced this challenge head-on.

Born in Nijmegen in 1521 Canisius joined the Society of Jesus in 1543. He was the first Dutchman to join this newly founded order. His dedication to the faith led him on extensive journeys across Germany Austria Bohemia Moravia Switzerland and even the British Isles. He preached tirelessly wrote extensively and established Jesuit colleges. His famous German Catechism made Catholic teachings accessible to a wider audience. Think of him as a religious rockstar of his time. His teachings spread like wildfire thanks to the printing press a technology he embraced fully. He even declined the post of Bishop of Vienna preferring to continue his work among the people.

But Canisius’s influence extended beyond his sermons and writings. He advised Emperor Ferdinand I and engaged in debates with Protestant theologians. He wasn’t afraid to challenge those who opposed the Catholic faith. He was skilled in both diplomacy and direct confrontation. Canisius even had run-ins with Maximilian II the Emperor’s son. Maximilian appointed a married priest which Canisius strongly opposed. The result was Maximilian harbouring a grudge against Canisius for the rest of his life.

Canisius was not just a scholar and debater. He was also a pastor and spiritual guide. He worked with people from all walks of life visiting hospitals and prisons. He understood people’s needs and tailored his message to their circumstances. He believed in gentle persuasion and avoided the harsh rhetoric common in religious debates of that time. That’s why he is remembered as a beacon of hope and reason.

He spent his later years in Fribourg Switzerland where he founded the Jesuit College Saint-Michel. Even after suffering a stroke at the age of 70 Canisius continued his work using a secretary. He remained steadfast in his faith and his dedication to spreading the word of God.

Saint Peter Canisius’ legacy lives on. This church St Petrus Canisius stands as a tribute to this extraordinary man.
