Gazing upon St Peter’s RC Church, can you sense the echoes of whispered prayers and joyous hymns? This magnificent structure, designed by Peter Paul Pugin, stands as a testament to faith and community. St Peter’s RC Church opened its doors in 1903, replacing a smaller church on Partick Bridge Street. The church, constructed with rock-faced red sandstone, is a beautiful example of the Gothic Revival style. Inside, you’ll find an intricately carved alabaster reredos and altar, also designed by Pugin. The stunning stained-glass windows, crafted by Sister Callista of Notre Dame Convent, Dowanhill, cast a kaleidoscope of colors across the interior. Interestingly, the original altar, as seen in older photographs, was wider than the current one. The marble pulpit also appears to be a later addition, altering Pugin’s original vision. St Peter’s has served the community for over a century. The church continues to be a place of worship and a cherished landmark in Partick.
