The Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea has a rich history. It significantly contributed to the country’s development, especially in health and education.

St Peter’s Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community. Let’s delve into some interesting facts about the Catholic presence here. Approximately 27% of Papua New Guinea’s population are Catholic adherents. That’s about two million people. The country is divided into nineteen dioceses including four archdioceses. This highlights the extensive reach of the Church.

The first Catholic Mass in Papua New Guinea was a historic event. It took place in 1606 on the Louisiade Archipelago, possibly on Sideia Island. A chaplain accompanying Torres’s expedition led this inaugural mass. This marked the beginning of Catholic religious practices intertwining with local culture over time.

Missionaries played a crucial role. From the late 19th century, German missionaries from the Society of the Divine Word established missions. These missions dotted the Sepik River and the northern coastlines. Bishop Louis Couppé stood against the local slave trade in East New Britain. His efforts significantly curbed this inhumane practice.

Many faced immense challenges. Italian missionary Father Giovanni Battista Mazzucconi was martyred on Woodlark Island in 1845. In 1945, Peter To Rot, a catechist, was killed by Japanese forces for refusing to embrace polygamy. His beatification by Pope John Paul II in 1995 was a significant moment.

World War II brought immense suffering. Forty-five missionaries were massacred on the Japanese destroyer Akikaze in 1943. Despite these tragedies, the Church persevered.

The church has many worshipers. St Peter Chanel Parish in Erima is one of the longest-serving parishes in the Port Moresby northeast area. It is composed of eight Basic Christian Communities. Archbishop Rochus Tatamai MSC of Rabaul Archdiocese visited the Erima St Peter Chanel Parish. This happened on April 14, 2024, to lead liturgical masses.

Parishioners like Emmanuella Morea expressed joy. She felt honored to have the Archbishop celebrate Mass with them. The church serves several schools nearby. These include St Peter Chanel Primary School and Maino Heduru Vocational Centre.

The feast day of Blessed Peter Torot is a significant celebration. Catholics commemorate this day with song and dance. They also share food to remember his courageous work. Father Michael emphasized Peter Torot’s strong faith. He highlighted his courage in spreading the gospel.
