Imagine stepping back in time. You are standing before the magnificent St Peter and Paul Cathedral in Brandenburg an der Havel. This majestic structure is the largest medieval church in the city. It is also known as the Brandenburg Cathedral.

Its story begins in 1165. That’s when the foundation stone was laid. Construction started as a Romanesque Saalkirche. A single-nave cross-shaped building made of brick. The ambitious plans expanded. The cathedral grew into a three-aisled Brick Gothic basilica. Two west towers were planned but only one was finished. The other became a stump a testament to perhaps a lack of funds or unstable ground.

But this cathedral stands as a symbol. It represents the eastward expansion of the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Otto I founded the Diocese of Brandenburg here in 948. This was on top of an older Slavic fortress. However the original settlement was lost during a Slavic revolt in 983. The diocese was restored in 1161. This was part of Albert the Bear’s establishment of the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1157.

The cathedral’s interior is stunning. White walls are accented by red bands. These are along arches windows and ribbed vaults. The rounded arches follow the original Romanesque style. The ribbed vaults and pointed Gothic windows are additions from later periods. The cathedral is filled with artwork. It ranges from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Elaborate stone epitaphs honor local clergymen and dukes. The wooden pulpit is a masterpiece. It has floral carvings and colored statues of Peter and Paul the cathedral’s patron saints.

The Bohemian Altar a triptych is a particularly noteworthy piece. Created around 1375 it depicts a coronation of Mary and saints. It’s connected to Emperor Charles IV’s visit. He donated valuable relics to the cathedral. The cathedral’s monastery archive is the oldest east of the Elbe River. It contains the first written mention of Berlin from 1244. The main organ by Joachim Wagner from 1725 remains almost entirely in its original state.

The St Peter and Paul Cathedral isn’t just a building. It’s the ‘cradle of the Mark Brandenburg’. Its history is woven into the very fabric of Brandenburg an der Havel. Its existence reflects the interplay of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its treasures speak of emperors donations and the resilience of a community that has rebuilt and preserved this remarkable place for centuries. It’s truly a sight to behold.
