Picture this: A bustling Dublin market in 1697. The air thick with the smells of fresh produce and livestock. The sounds of bartering merchants and the clatter of carts. That was Smithfield. And right here in the heart of it all was the nascent St. Paul’s Parish.
St. Paul’s Parish wasn’t always here. In 1697 it was carved from the sprawling St. Michan’s Parish. Think of it as a splitting of a family. A new branch needing its own space to grow. This new parish focused on the rapidly expanding Smithfield market. A testament to Dublin’s growing importance as a trading center.
The first church wasn’t the beautiful structure we’d envision today. It was described in 1821 as a rather crude building. Three rugged stone walls. Few windows. And a roof described as enormous and extravagantly pitched. It’s quite a contrast to the elegant Gothic building that would follow. This first church was consecrated in 1702 and housed within its modest walls a thriving community.
Not just any community. St. Paul’s was a hub for the Northside elite. Think prominent gentry families. Their children baptized. Their deceased buried in the adjoining graveyard. The philosopher George Berkeley even held his consecration as Bishop of Cloyne within these walls in 1734. This humble church hosted a man of significant intellect and influence.
It wasn’t all refinement and theology. The graveyard served as the primary burial ground for Dublin’s military garrison. Soldiers from battles past. Some monuments even mark the tragic deaths of soldiers in the 1803 rebellion. A stark reminder of the turbulent times.
The church served the community in practical ways too. The income from the church’s seat sales supported not just religious activities. It funded the parish watch. An early form of local police force. A surprising element of the story for a place of worship.
But time takes its toll. By the end of the 18th century the parish began to fade. The church fell into disrepair. Eventually it was replaced in 1824 by the church designed by William Farrell. A neat edifice in the Gothic style with a small but elegant spire.
Sadly the community that once filled St. Paul’s Parish dwindled in the 20th century. The church was deconsecrated in 1987. Now it houses the SPADE Enterprise Centre. Yet the legacy of St. Paul’s Parish remains. A whisper of its past echoing in the walls of this building before us a tangible link to Dublin’s rich history.
