The sound of the bell from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church has echoed across Nundah for over 150 years. It’s a sound that has carried through generations, a constant in a world of change. St. Paul’s is a historic Lutheran congregation located in the northern suburbs of Brisbane. It’s part of a ‘Lutheran precinct’, as the locals like to call it. It’s not just the church though; St Paul’s has several other facilities. It serves the community with an aged care home, a childcare centre and a lodge. The original settlers on the site were missionaries. They came to Queensland from Germany in the 1830s hoping to convert the local Aboriginal people to Christianity. The mission faced many challenges, as the local Aboriginal people weren’t always interested in the message the missionaries brought. The missionaries left, and new settlers arrived. Many of these new settlers were German emigrants who were drawn to this part of Australia. The German settlers built a church in 1866, and the bell that you hear today was shipped from Germany to this very spot. They used it to call worshippers to services for decades. The bell has survived multiple renovations over the years. They even used the timbers from the old church when they built a new one here in 1948. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is a monument to faith, perseverance and the enduring power of community. The old bell continues to ring, a testament to the long history and enduring spirit of the church.
