Standing here before St. Paul’s College, it’s easy to imagine the bustling lives that have unfolded within these walls. St. Paul’s College is a testament to the Vincentian Fathers’ commitment to education and faith. Founded in 1950, this Catholic school is the result of Archbishop John Charles McQuaid’s request for a school for boys in the growing area of Raheny. The order, known for their dedication to serving the poor, embraced the challenge and purchased a large piece of land, including the former residence of Bishop Plunket, to build the school.

The college has seen its share of changes throughout the years. The gymnasium was even used as a social club for the local Belgrove Football Club after their pavilion burned down until it ceased operations in 1997. The school’s large grounds, once encompassing over 180 acres, were used not just for the students but also for local sports clubs and community activities. Sadly, the swimming pool, once a beloved public amenity, was closed in 2006 after falling into disrepair. The Vincentians, however, were deemed disingenuous by some, for selling the pool site for development.

Today, St. Paul’s College continues to be a pillar of the community. It’s a place where students can grow and learn, while remaining true to their Catholic faith. And although the once expansive grounds have shrunk due to development plans, the school’s legacy continues to resonate. The stories of its past and the lives of its alumni, some of whom went on to prominence, serve as a reminder of its significance in Irish history and culture.
